How does this work?

Action Verbs

  1. Third Person Present Tense
  2. Third Person = he, she, it, they, Jeff, Roberta
  3. Present tense = no -ed or -ing ending

Compound Subjects

Compound subjects connected by an "and" use a plural verb

    1. Measles and Influenza are two viruses that have vaccines to defend against them.
    2. Bartles and James make wine coolers.
    3. Sausage, mushroom, and onions have the best flavors.
    4. GM, Ford, and Chrysler were responsible for most of the recalls in 2014.

Compound Subjects

Compound subjects connected by an "or" or "nor" use only the subject closest to the verb to decide.

    1. Mary or her sisters are going to help feed the homeless on Thanksgiving.
    2. The players or the coach is the reason the Wildcats have won so many games.
    3. Mushrooms or pepperoni is what most people prefer on pizza.
    4. Neither Jim nor the twins were at the game.
    5. Neither the police officers nor the prosecutor was able to fully explain the charges.

Prepositions

Sometimes a prepositional phrase gets in between the subject and the verb. Ignore them to get it right.

  1. Most common prepositions:
    of, at, in, on, over, under, for, with, by, from, to, between.
  2. None of the contestants was happy with the results
  3. None of the contestants was happy with the results
  4. Neither of the students is unhappy with their test scores.
  5. Neither of the students is unhappy with their test scores.
  6. One of the drugs in the clinical trials is going to work.
  7. One of the drugs in the clinical trials is going to work.
